Sclerotherapy is an extremely effective minimally invasive procedure used to eliminate the appearance and pain associated with spider veins and varicose veins. It involves the injection of a substance called a sclerosant into a varicose vein. The sclerosant causes the vein to close by shrinking the inside of the vein.
Benefits
– Improves cosmetic appearance
– Relieves itching, burning, aching, swelling associated with vein disease
During The Procedure
A small needle is inserted into the vein and the sclerosant is injected. This may be repeated depending on how many veins are being treated during the session. The procedure usually takes 5 to 30 minutes depending on how many veins have to be treated, and their size. Over time, the body will absorb the treated vein, and it will disappear.
After The Procedure
After sclerotherapy, the patient is advised to wear compression stockings or elasticated bandages over the veins to prevent blood from returning to the vein when standing. The length of time compression garments should be worn varies from a few days to several weeks.
Generally, patients can resume all normal activities after treatment and do not need a recovery period.
